Dear Reader, She said: "There is no such thing as a space safe from activation." Because so many of us have been taught that calm is the goal. That if we're triggered in clinic, in a preceptor relationship, in a difficult birth — something has gone wrong with us. We're not cut out for this. We need to hold it together better. But here's what nervous system science actually tells us: if there's no activation, your nervous system isn't working. You need it. Your patients need you to have it. The goal was never to eliminate activation — it was always to learn to move through it. This is the kind of education that doesn't live in a textbook or a clinical rotation syllabus — it lives in community, in conversation, in the kind of honest, held space where someone can say "I'm feeling activated right now" and know exactly what to do next. This is one piece of what Christie and I have built inside the Midwifery Wisdom Fellowship — alongside the business foundations, the professional identity work, the preceptor dynamics, and everything else that nobody teaches you when you're just trying to get through your hours. Cohort 2 begins September 1. If you're a student attending births or a graduate within two years of completion, this was built for you — and if someone you know is at that stage, we'd love it if you passed this along to them.

Dear Reader,Starting an IV is not optional in this work. And yet most of us left school having watched it far more than we'd done it. This lab is built to close that gap. On August 27, I'm hosting a live, small-group IV Skills Lab — 90 minutes on Zoom where you'll watch venipuncture demonstrated in real time, then practice it yourself, with live feedback. Hands moving, technique corrected in the moment. Here's what we're covering: IV equipment — catheters, tubing, extension sets, what's...
Dear Midwife, As midwives, we make hundreds of decisions every week. Some are straightforward. Others happen in the middle of uncertainty—when emotions are high, information is incomplete, and families are looking to us for guidance. But what if the greatest influence on our decisions isn't our knowledge... ...it's our bias? Every one of us carries cognitive biases. They're part of being human. They shape how we interpret information, communicate with clients, assess risk, and respond under...
